Details
Indigenous Science (e.g. Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK), has gained increasing recognition within Natural Resources over recent decades. While many scholars advocate for TEK, TEK and Indigenous Research Methodologies often remain marginalized in Western academic settings, with limited opportunities for Indigenous-led research.
In this presentation, Dr. Ramos (Yurok/Karuk/Chicana) will explore innovative frameworks for conducting culturally sensitive wildlife research in partnership with Indigenous communities, drawing from her personal experiences and academic journey. As the Principal Investigator of the Wildlife, Environmental Stewardship, and Indigenous Peoples Lab and Assistant Professor of Indigenous Forestry, Dr. Ramos will discuss practical approaches to the furtherance of Indigenous-focused research in the Natural Resource Academy while building meaningful partnerships with Indigenous communities. Her work demonstrates how Indigenous Science and Methodologies can enhance wildlife research, contribute to the continuance of Indigenous lifeways, and create more inclusive academic spaces.
Dr. Ramos’ campus visit is supported through a partnership with Sealaska Heritage Institute and its Indigenizing Education for Alaska (IEA) program, The IEA program is supported by the Alaska Native Education (ANE) program of the U.S. Department of Education, as part of a $2.4 million award which pays for 100% of the total cost of the program. The contents of this program do not represent the policy, views or endorsement of ANE, DOE, or the U.S. Government.
