Details

Lars Krutak, PhD, is a tattoo anthropologist, photographer, and writer based in Washington, D.C. A research associate at the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico, he is the author of several books on Indigenous tattoo culture and practice, including Tattoo Traditions of Native North America and Spiritual Skin: Magical Tattoos and Scarification. He also served as senior editor of Ancient Ink: The Archaeology of Tattooing, the first book dedicated to the archaeological study of tattooing. He hosted the Discovery Channel series Tattoo Hunter and his writing has appeared in scientific journals, edited volumes, and popular magazines. His new book, Tattoo Traditions of Asia, is the first single volume dedicated to the study of Indigenous tattooing practices across Asia and will be published in October 2024 by the University of Hawai‘i Press. He is a proud alumnus of the University of Alaska Fairbanks where he pursued Master's research on the tattooing heritage of the St. Lawrence Island Yupiget.
